Parador Alcalá de Henares

In the first analysis of the Old School of Santo Tomás and the area limited by the wall that defines the building site it is easy to detect the old line of the convent with its open space and that enclosed for a garden or vegetable garden.

As the project strategy we propose, we establish the will to recover that duality of cloister and garden space. It is under these premises that the motto of the competition arises: to build a SCULPTED GARDEN, where the necessary building to complete the programme of Parador and Catering School will extend throughout the surface area of the site, with a vast garden underneath that is perforated by multiple and diverse patios that generate an interesting variety of room spaces linked to same.

The linear pavilions of the Carpentry Workshop and the arched façades of the workshop premises will be maintained, as is required by their condition of protected buildings. However, we believe that, once its façades and structural centrelines have been preserved, the surfaces can be different, like the surfaces proposed in an L schematic, optimising the use of the upper floors, upgrading the value of the façades to be maintained and resolving a new, more neutral, back façade that acts as a latticed filter for the balconies of the rooms housed inside it.

With the acceptance of the central patio in the shape of a wedge between the two linear workshop buildings to be maintained, the separation between the programmes for the Parador and the Catering School is clearly marked, each of these being supported on one of the restored linear bodies.

The need to house a large surface area intended for lounges and dining rooms leads us to consider doubling the present cloister with another analogous and adjacent one that leads to a sequence of three lounges-dining rooms with two intermediate cloisters, that can be used as external rooms extending these dining rooms for a large part of the year.

The bedrooms, as the central motive of the programme for the Parador, have an ambitious approach in their configuration. A standard double room is the one that will extend throughout the entire surface of the garden as a very clear concept of a room linked to a private patio, based on the schematics for Japanese rooms that turns out to be very efficient when using very limited dimensions.

Developing the rooms on two levels will allow perfect control to be guaranteed of the sun entering and ventilation of each room level linked to the patio. The schematic of the room is structured on a sequence of space for the hall, bedroom, independent gallery or gallery linked to the garden or to the bedroom by means of a double sliding glass pane, as an environment with its own meaning and as a space for transit between the patio and the bedroom. Then there will be a small patio, on which the bathroom also opens, placed laterally and developed along the whole length of the room.

The corridors that give access to all these rooms-patio will have the luminosity provided by the neighbouring patios, suggested by means of lattice windows.

The Catering School follows the approach to the entire of the project by seeking to dissolve the volume built on a great horizontal platform that basically absorbs the classrooms and rooms of the residents, together with dining rooms and kitchens. With a schematic of perforations of square proportion, a series of patios is created which, in half the surface of the square opening on the lower floor there is a small garden and, on the first floor and staggered, there is a balcony of the room of the residents, the roofs of all these platforms intended to form a garden in which the perforations have been made for the aforementioned patios.

La obra del Parador de Alcalá es el resultado de un largo proceso para recuperar el conjunto del antiguo Convento de Santo Tomás, edificio de finales del siglo XVI y que ha tenido como último uso el de centro penitenciario, y que comienza con la iniciativa tomada por Paradores de Turismo al convocar un concurso al cual invita a un nutrido grupo de importantes estudios de arquitectura españoles.

La obra realizada tiene como estrategia recuperar la dualidad de edificio claustral y el espacio ajardinado de la huerta vinculado a él. El objetivo es construir un JARDIN TALLADO, en donde la edificación necesaria para completar el programa del nuevo Parador se extenderá sin sobrepasar la altura de la tapia perimetral antigua bajo un extenso jardín perforado, tallado, por múltiples y diversos patios que generarán una interesante variedad de espacios de habitación vinculados a ellos.

Ante la presencia de un viejo edificio creamos una nueva “atmósfera”. Hay que RE-PRESENTAR (volver a poner en presente) la antigua arquitectura con mecanismos y lenguajes de nuestra cultura contemporánea. No sólo restaurar ó rehabilitar, sino revitalizar.

La arquitectura heredada se recupera hasta dejarla en su estado original, para posteriormente plantear una intervención con voluntad de contemporaneidad basada en la búsqueda del contraste, de las diferencias que ayudan a poner en valor y realzar lo ya existente: la ruina y el vidrio, la madera y el metal, la oscuridad frente a la luz…


La solución que adoptamos de grandes superficies de patios y jardines, vinculados a las habitaciones del hotel, responde al deseo de ofertar unos nuevos espacios sensibles a las mayores preocupaciones medioambientales. Un edificio “horizontal y verde” frente a otra posible alternativa de edificio vertical con fachadas y en altura.

En resumen, el nuevo Parador quiere convertirse en un recinto que, guiado por sus trazas antiguas, ofrezca al visitante todo un mundo de espacios y sensaciones que le aproxime a un mejor entendimiento del mundo de claustros y patios que construye toda la ciudad de Alcalá de Henares, y a la vez le ponga en relación con un entendimiento contemporáneo y moderno de la arquitectura.
