OBJECTS FOR THE PERIPHERY OF MADRID
This work resulted in the First Prize in the EUROPAN 1 competition, although the proposal awarded the prize included six towers with the proportions of a cube facing the M-30 ring-road in Madrid.
Due to several circumstances, the plot and the number of towers in the proposal for the competition varied until they were reduced to two towers with 28 dwellings each one, developed on seven floors and located on a plot facing the M-40 ring-road.
The basic concept when undertaking the definition of the housing tower, linked to an extremely degraded urban landscape, is to accept non-contextualization of the architectural object as the objective.
Within a shapeless periphery, the tower is conceived as a strange, sculptural element, with a strong abstract configuration that frees it from environmental conditioners of little relevance.
This peculiarity forces them to be conceived to be seen from cars, at high speed, arranged like sculptures, copies with harsh realism, copies of architectural leftovers and flotsam from the shipwreck of the outskirts of our cities.
The tower is conceived as two floating shapes, a cube supported on a base, also cubic, both turning into each other, decomposing, even forming non-unitary architecture, fragmented and fragmentary. This building is broken up by cracks at the strip corresponding to the communications core, that opens on to façades from aerial platforms and covered in the upper part by shapes in folded plate sheeting, operating like soft forms, crystalline surfaces that deny the closed nature of the space.
The proximity of elements such as gas tanks, high voltage cable masts, road signals,... all of metal, suggested the possibility of including more significant elements in the composition of the towers, such as lift shafts, roofs, windows and balconies, this same metal character for facilitating a possible urban continuity.
The need to recover certain values lost in the groups of dwellings (such as the existence of a real community or neighbourhood space, whose historical reference could be the "corralas" in Madrid) encouraged us to tear up the central core of vertical communications, in this way allowing for the creation of a common, permeable space with the development of corridors that will produce greater contact between the tower dwellers.
OBJETOS PARA LA PERIFERIA DE MADRID
La presente obra es el resultado del Primer Premio del concurso EUROPAN 1, si bien la propuesta premiada comprendía entonces seis torres de proporciones cúbicas frente a la autovía M-30 de Madrid.
Por circunstancias diversas, el solar y el número de torres de la propuesta del concurso variaron hasta reducirse a dos torres de 28 viviendas cada una desarrolladas en siete alturas, y ubicadas en un solar frente a la autovía de circunvalación M-40.
El concepto fundamental a la hora de abordar la definición de la torre de viviendas, vinculada a un paisaje urbano degradado en extremo, es aceptar como objetivo la no contextualización del objeto arquitectónico.
Dentro de una periferia informe la torre se concibe como un elemento extraño, escultórico, con una fuerte configuración abstracta, que la libera de condicionantes ambientales de escasa relevancia.
Esta peculiaridad las hace ser concebidas para ser vistas desde el coche; a gran velocidad, están dispuestas como esculturas, copias con fuerte realismo, copias de los restos y desechos arquitectónicos, de ese naufragio que son las afueras de nuestras ciudades.
La torre se concibe como dos formas en flotación, un cubo apoyado sobre una base, también de forma cúbica, girando ambas entre sí, descomponiéndose, llegando a crear una arquitectura no unitaria, fragmentada y fragmentaria. Esta edificación se quiebra por una franja correspondiente al núcleo de comunicaciones, que se abre a las fachadas desde unas plataformas voladas, quedando cubierto en la parte superior por unas formas resueltas en chapa plegada, que operan como formas blandas, superficies cristalinas que niegan el carácter cerrado del espacio.
La proximidad de elementos cómo depósitos de gas, mástiles de tendido de alta tensión, señalizaciones viarias,... todos ellos metálicos, nos sugirió la posibilidad de incorporar a los elementos más significativos de la composición de las torres, como columnas de ascensores, cubiertas, ventanas y balcones, este mismo carácter metálico para facilitar una posible continuidad urbana.
La necesidad de recuperar ciertas valencias perdidas en las agrupaciones de viviendas (como la existencia de un verdadero espacio comunitario o vecinal, cuya referencia histórica pudieran ser las corralas madrileñas) nos animó a rasgar el núcleo central de comunicaciones verticales, permitiendo así crear un espacio común, permeable, con desarrollos de corredores que producirán un mayor contacto entre los habitantes de la torre.
